Making a difference

for others around end-of-life experiences.

End-of-life is a sacred time in a person’s life. I believe all people deserve compassion, dignity and above all, a loving space to be complete at the end of their life’s journey.

END-OF-LIFE DOULA

Care

At ACE End-of-Life Doula Services, I help individuals and families navigate the end-of-life journey with guidance, comfort, and planning. End-of-life can be overwhelming—emotionally, logistically, and spiritually—but no one should have to go through it alone.

I provide personalized support by helping clients create comprehensive end-of-life plans, guiding difficult conversations, offering bedside presence, and ensuring their wishes are honored. I also educate families, communities, and professionals on advance care planning, death literacy, and legacy work.

My role complements hospice and palliative care, filling in the gaps with emotional, social, spiritual and holistic support. Whether someone is planning ahead or facing immediate needs, I empower them to approach this stage of life with peace and dignity.

If you or someone you know is looking for compassionate guidance during this important time, I’d love to connect and share how I can help.

End-of-Life Doulas,

The Role

End-of-Life Doulas provide non-medical, holistic support and comfort to the dying person and their family, which may include education and guidance as well as emotional, spiritual or practical care.

-National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA)

An End-of-Life Doula is a non-medical person trained to care for someone holistically (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) at the end of life. This isn’t a new skill set. A hundred years ago, this was the way end-of-life was experienced.

-Doulagivers Institute

End-of-Life Doulas (EOLDs) are non-medical companions to the dying and their
families. Doulas do not take the place of hospice personnel; rather, they complement other services that a dying person and their family may be receiving, including hospice or palliative care. They provide a wide range of holistic services, including physical, emotional, spiritual and practical support. EOLDs may work with families from the initial
diagnosis through bereavement.

-National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO)

Joan Bretthauer is an end-of-life doula serving individuals and families.

MY NAME IS

Joan

and I am passionate about the end-of-life experience.

Just as birth doulas lovingly support the arrival of a new life with comfort, wisdom, and care, end-of-life doulas offer the same presence as a soul prepares to transition. Birth and death are mirrors—each a threshold, each a sacred unfolding.

As an end-of-life doula, I walk alongside individuals and their loved ones with reverence, helping create space for peace, healing, and deep connection. Through holistic support, gentle guidance, and the honoring of each person’s unique journey, I hold the moments between breaths as holy.

Whether in a home, hospital, hospice, or care community, I offer a heart-centered presence that invites grace and meaning into the final chapter.

To me, this work is not just a service—it is a calling. A way to remind each soul: you are not alone, and your departure is just as meaningful as your arrival.

Why Hire an End-of-Life Doula?

Families benefit from hiring an end-of-life doula through profound emotional support, expert guidance, and dedicated presence that simply can’t be measured in dollars. The cost is justified by the personalized care that allows family members to be present as loved ones rather than exhausted caregivers.

We provide continuous, knowledgeable support through unfamiliar territory, ensuring your loved one’s wishes are honored while handling practical matters that might otherwise overwhelm you. We create space for meaningful final connections, facilitate important conversations, and offer experienced guidance that helps transform a potentially clinical experience into a peaceful, dignified transition. Many families find that this investment ultimately saves them from regrets, reduces caregiver burnout, and provides comfort that extends well beyond their loved one’s final days.
